2019: Salute To Caron De Beaumarchais

One of the men who played the most important role in the independence of the United-States is Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. He financed the guns for the insurgents.  He convinced the French King, Louis XVI, to send armies commanded by La Fayette and Rochambeau, which won the fights against British troups.

Beaumarchais is famous because he created by contract the “Right of the Author” (1777 Le Barbier de Séville). It was first legally expressed by article 1 of the US Constitution:

“The Congress shall have Power … to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries”.

As we have entered the Era of Creators, better securing intellectual property has become today most imperative. It determines the protection, level and the quality of the investment in R&D.
